Five Reasons to shop at your local Farmers Market

The season of rain has passed (hopefully), the season of sun is upon us and along with that will come the opening of local farmers markets.

I always enjoy this type of shopping and now that my community has its own market I love it even more.

There are probably dozens of reason to shop at a farmers market. Maybe you’re related to one of the vendors! I’ve combined a few of my reasons and hope to encourage you to find one near you to get some great food and have a great experience.

Context – Fitness That Fits Your Life

By Andy Laird (trainer and motivator extraordinaire)

There are three attributes that I refer to as “The Three C’s of Fitness” – Commitment (the point where motivation turns into action), Consistency and Context. Today I would like to discuss Context and the way it relates to how we train and eat.

Context is defined as “the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood and assessed”…. or, in other words, doing the stuff that makes sense and fits congruently with the rest of your life.  And it’s important that what you do, how you workout, what and why you eat are all done in ways that make sense for your life, your goals. Only then will it become a lasting contributor to the quality of your life.

Let’s face it, if you decided to follow a generic program from an athlete’s website and the plan calls for you to weight train four hours every day with daily massages for recovery but you are married, working full time and raising two young children, chances are good that you will not be able to stick to the plan (or you end up divorced and unemployed…!)

Or, a more common scenario I see is that someone wants to lose 20lb. by “trying to get to the gym three times a week and trying to eat healthier”. In truth, this isn’t a plan – it is a vague admission that something needs to change without the necessary commitment to make it happen.  And I’m sorry to say that, quite often, people employing that approach quit because they don’t see the results.

So, how do you find the approach that works for you and fits into your life?

Resolution season is upon us with all of its great intention and motivation. I’ve already seen people posting their 2016 goals on social media sites, and heard gym conversations regarding the same. Without doubt, some version of “be healthier”, “get fit”, “lose weight” or “eat better” is top of mind for most people. The statistics say that the second only to “live life to the fullest”, some sort of healthy lifestyle change represents resolution plans for most people. Here are a 5 tips that will help you realize your goals……because healthy living should be forever, not just for a few weeks until you forgot you even made that commitment to yourself. Read more

What’s your Trigger to Staying Healthy and Fit?

As an owner of a fitness centre, the biggest challenge is inspiring people to make permanent lifestyle adjustments that will keep them healthy and vital. BUT, it can be done! It’s so much more than working hard for 6 weeks to look good in a bathing suit. What is your trigger? What makes you want to be fit? Is it to have energy for life? Is it to prevent disease and aches and pains as you get older? Is it to look better in a bathing suit (that’s a great side effect)? Is it to be a good role model for your children so they know that real food and activity is just normal?

If you are making a resolution to get fit, I urge you to write down your “why”. Put it somewhere visible so you remember what your inspiration is on the days that you don’t feel motivated. Read more

As we sit right in the middle of the Christmas Season with all of the family gatherings, holiday parties, scrumptious treats and shopping sprees I know that resolution time is just around the corner.
We all know one fact about resolutions! One of the top five New Year’s resolutions every single year is “to get fit and live a healthy lifestyle”.

Being a gym owner, I have to say it’s an important month for our business. We have lots of new people flocking to the gym with very good intentions. Sadly, about 75% of them fall off the wagon by March, if not sooner. Read more

What Keeps you Coming Back to the Gym?

gym Keswick Ontario

A few months ago I was preparing a fun editorial for a local paper. I had some time to chat with some regular members of 24/7 NRG Fitness and find out what motivates them and keeps them coming back to the gym to exercise regularly. It’s a choice we all make every day. Do I choose to watch TV or go for a jog? Should I play on Facebook or go to the gym? Will I veg out or get my blood pumping? Am I going let my body fail or will I work out and stay vital?

On that interview day I spoke to both men and women from their 20’s to their 70’s. All are active, workout several times per week and eat a balanced diet. Here is what they had to say: Read more

As with any great project, it takes a community of people with vast experience and expertise to make perfect. Our transformation from Fitness Force to 24/7 NRG Fitness is no exception. We are weeks into our new look and new name and still clients are walking in the door and saying “wow, this is amazing”! I can hardly wait for the new equipment to arrive. Then, it will be complete.

Here I am just days away from the grand opening of my new and improved gym called 24/7 NRG Fitness still right here in Keswick Ontario. It’s just as exciting as the days before taking over as the owner of Fitness Force; A great idea, new focus and huge expectations. The biggest thing that strikes me is how many incredible people with talent, ideas and expertise that have come together to help make this happen. The supporting people are different people from the Fitness Force business plan to the 24/7 NRG Fitness business plan. But the fact remains that I DID NOT do this alone. It has taken months of planning with experts in various fields, weeks of renovations and construction, days of waiting for all the bits and pieces to come together. Hours of brainstorming and minutes of….well, nothing only takes minutes. Suffice it to say, that this past year creating our new image has been busy and fascinating. Read more
